Wikibot — A Wikipedia Articles Reader App Reviews

83 Customer Reviews:

I have not yet been able to use the app. Every single time I have tried to use it, it has crashed. All I do is open it, search for a term, and select the article I want, and the app crashes. Consistenly. You ought to avoid this and use Safari instead. I should have read the reviews, so its my own fault now.

It is very simple and nice application to read through articles in wikipedia. I believe it would be better if there was a button to bookmarks on the interface though. I downloaded this instead of the WIKI offline just becuase it saves the articles in the history so that i can recall them when the computer is offline. (Did not want the offline version since i do not need to keep all the articles that are available on wiki.) However there is no search feature for the history where the offline articles are stored. If you have a long list of history and when you are offline, if you would like to read one of those articles that you loaded before, you have to find it in a long list of entries. It usually is painful. If the search is improved on this application (if the search looks up not only on the wiki servers but also on the history files stored), it will be the best wiki application in the app store.

Very good application for viewing Wikipedia articles. Fast and great interface. Only minor caveat that I found kind of annoying (and that hopefully gets remedied in a future release): the two-finger back/forth swiping behavior is the opposite in this app as it is in other Lion programs like Safari (so the back/forth navigation swipes are the opposite direction of what they are in Safari).

Im rating Wikibot 4 stars for its overall great layout and usability. It improves upon Safari browsing in many obvious ways. Here are suggestions to help Wikibot gain that last star: Have the opening page be user defined. eg: User Guide, Main Page, Last Seen, etc. The desktop User Guide should be desktop specific. (Same for iDevice Guide.) Change the Main Page shortcut to Cmd-Shift M (more memorable and M is not in use) Allow Sidebar font size to be enlarged by user. Bookmarks and Favorites seem to be the same so pick one name and go with it. These suggestions will only improve upon an otherwise excellent app.

That other Wiki app seems to be broken so Im stuck with this one. This is still a great app. Is it possible to have the Main page of the Wikipedia homepage to be the default? Everytime when I quick the app and when I open again another day, it shows the last searched page that I viewed. I want it to show the main page. Can that be fixed? Also, can you add another font?: Arial Thanks

Spent about half an hour trying to figure out how to sync up through iCloud - and then discovered magic: everything was automatically synced through my mac and my iOS devices - I dint have to sign up or log in or do anything. Magical stuff!

Very slick looking, and super fast! Faster than any of my web browsers. Gripes: Theres no hotkey for bookmarking articles on the UI, forcing the user to use the Command-D function is less than ideal. Id like the app to feature a Home key and start at the Wikipedia Home page on launch. Theres some good reading there that one would not otherwise know about. Other than that, its great.

It does what it says, so no complaints there. I just cant get over the fact that it doesnt allow much customization to the aesthetics of the app itself. As a mac user I want it to be personalized to my preferences. E.g. should have the option to hide the side bar, I dislike having to drag it every time I start up the app. There should also be the option of a shortcut search or even having the option of having the app in the menu bar if you so choose. I also dislike how the sepia feature (which is a must for reading apps) colours the text. I like the text remaining black on the yellow background. Easy on the eyes. Just dim the black a bit. Dont make it brown! (personal preference of course). OH, and the popup window when you are typing something into the search box is ugly and deters from the entire app. Anyways, the app is great for what it is. But, I would like to see it do a lot more for the price. What makes this app any different then just opening up a browser and searching on wiki and then viewing the screen through a reading mode such as Clearly by Evernote? Nothing! If you want your app to stand out, make it do MORE! I would not advise getting this app, unless you dont like using a web browser, then by all means go ahead.

I prefer using this App than actually searching for the same topics on the wikipedia website. This App lets you easily store all your favorite articles and It also lets you share them on all your Apple devices. The interface is clean and very intuitive. I recommend this App.

Was great before the recent update. I have a macbook pro and mac mini and it freezes on both. Screen is blank. Will try to return to previous version.

colarusso v1.61 · 13 years ago

Purchased this for my 2008 Macbook Pro was working fine and in the last update they dropped support for 10.6 and now the app wont start up. No warning what so ever, had I known this I wouldnt have updated the app. Now money down the drain after only few months use; Terrible ethics at this company to make an app and then drop support for a version otherwise working well and with no warning- beware of avacado hills, defintely will think twice when I see their name anywhere from now on.

I love it, and it has basically replaced Safari for all Wikipedia needs for me. I am giving 4 stars out of 5, because the app could be better tuned for multilingual users such as myself: - the selection of search language (the language version of Wikipedia for which the top search box works) should be faster; multilingual users tend to work in 2-3 languages and often switch between them -- the most often used languages should be switchabe via keyboard and easily accessible icons (e.g. flags) besides the search box - the selection of article language (i.e. to switch to another language after the article is displayed) should also be faster, and keyboard-switchable All in all, a very good app. Im looking forward to improvements.

not bad

Very simple and friendly app, fast searching and great UI. Thanks!

gguzenkov v1.1 · 14 years ago

Great app, but i can`t change the font size and font itself (all menus are gray), and the default font size is too large. We are waiting for the update! And as yet it would be very nice if you could synchronize your bookmarks across multiple computers when you are more than one - it causes some problems: (

Good idea, but too much bugs

The idea is quite useful, but I cant copy the link, it crashes really often and I would like to create my personal playlist. It needs some work.

Luigiciro v1.52 · 14 years ago

How many times must you click on the text input field before it finally gets focus? I count two, at least, which is two to many. A well designed app should open with the text input field already in focus. This from an app which has just one input box. I don’t know if there is anything better but I’m looking.
